David Stones has led a complex and varied life, much of the time as an art educator. He majored in art at Teachers College after years as a printers apprentice and student. He was born in Derbyshire, England of English and Irish parents. The family emigrated to Auckland, New Zealand after the Second World War. His parents were a profound influence on Stones developing as an artist. His father a textile chemist, whilst his mother was a professional milliner, as well his brother was a professional artist, sculptor.
It is not easy and maybe impossible to place Stones' art with any particular group, school or fashion. Curiosity is the great energy behind the work, interpreting and exploring whatever he sees and feels. Sometimes it is music and dance that consume his interest, other times it is the natural environment and the influence of people on the environment.
Like themes, Stones explores a variety of art media and different ways of using the media, helping to release energy and beauty.
Currently Stones is returning to an earlier interest in the landscape, especially of the native bush and creatures of New Zealand. The influence of the vibrant weather, human impact and animals living in the rain forest.
